High school hours are quite different from college hours. The main difference is that in high schools, students must be busy and supervised every hour of the school day, or almost every hour. Furthermore, secondary school teachers generally have much higher teaching loads than in the case of universities.

As a result, college schedules are generally considered to involve more humane judgment, while high school schedules are a more computationally intensive task, see constraint satisfaction problem.

Block: Set of lessons from different courses that must be placed simultaneously.

Student Body: A set of students who are scheduled together, for example the roster group of 8A.

Band (or grouping): set of classes that involve the same student body, which are therefore horizontally linked, which means that they must be in separate periods.

Grade Group or Grade Level : A set of students at the same stage of their schooling, for example, Year 9.

Elective line: A block of many classes from many subjects so that each student can choose one subject from the line.

The task of building a high school schedule involves the following topics:
Some schools assign the same number of periods to all subjects, but more frequently. there are a variety of class lengths: 9 periods per cycle, 8, 7, 5 and so on. If this is the case, it means that it is not possible to have a 'consistent' structure with the schedule. "Consistent" means that each year's classes perfectly match the classes of other years in "supercolumns" throughout the school. Inconsistent schedules are much more difficult to build.

Every now and then there is 'vertical integration': a one-year class has a requirement to align with a particular class from the following year. This mainly occurs when students are allowed to take subjects at a higher level and not teach during those periods.

Part-time teachers must have certain full days off. They will specify to the school what days of the week they are or simply how many days per cycle they need rest. Such teachers can greatly increase the difficulty of scheduling when assigned to large blocks.

Sometimes two schools try to coordinate their schedules so that they can share a small number of staff. Schools often have different bell hours. Often times, there is also an inter-campus travel time that must be taken into account.

Sometimes a school is spread over two or more campuses, and the schedule should minimize the amount of travel between campuses for students and teachers. Also, when a trip occurs, the travel time must be taken into account.

Sometimes there are limitations imposed by outside organizations, such as reservations for sports facilities or technical education for seniors.
Sometimes there are 2 or 3 subjects that rotate between student bodies throughout the year. For example, 8A students could take Art in the first half of the year and Music in the second half.

Classes should be assigned classrooms in a way that attempts to give the same room to the same class  or the same room to the same teacher for all or most of the lessons.

Sometimes it is unavoidable to have what is known as a 'split class' - this is a class where one teacher takes it for some lessons and another teacher for other lessons. This can happen, p. Eg because there is not a single teacher available in all scheduled periods, or because no teacher can take it without exceeding their maximum teaching load.

Another definition of a divided class is when a teacher must teach two different grade levels in one period. This often happens with less popular subjects, which are not large enough to be divided into separate classes. Divided classes are generally considered highly undesirable.

After Hours Lessons: Sometimes an occasional lesson is scheduled "after hours", that is, before or after school or during lunch. This usually happens with older students. It can be a desperate response to insoluble scheduling problems or a compromise reached that the school can offer less popular subjects.
